China’s Solar Great Wall: Turning Desert into Power

Deep in Inner Mongolia’s Kubuqi Desert, China is building an ambitious solar farm known as the “Solar Great Wall.” This project will stretch 400 km long and 5 km wide, transforming barren sands into a vast field of photovoltaic panels. Scheduled for completion in 2030, the solar farm will generate 180,000 kWh of clean energy.

China already leads the world in solar power, with over 386,000 megawatts of installed capacity—more than half the global total. But the Solar Great Wall is about more than just energy. By shading the desert floor, the elevated panels reduce evaporation, creating a cooler, moister microclimate. This makes it possible for grasses and crops to grow beneath the panels, with the hope of turning desert land into fertile ground.

The Solar Great Wall stands as a powerful symbol of China’s commitment to renewable energy and environmental restoration.
