The NSW battery discount scheme officially ended on 30 June 2025, marking the close of one of the state’s most successful renewable energy incentives. While many households and small businesses benefitted from the program’s upfront battery discounts, attention has since shifted to the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which launched on 1 July 2025. This transition has reshaped how Australians approach battery storage, offering new opportunities and considerations for those still exploring comprehensive solar solutions.
Until its conclusion, the NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme provided rebates between $1,600 and $2,400 to eligible homes and small businesses installing batteries. Those who connected their system to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) also accessed an additional $250 to $400 rebate, claimable twice over six years.
From July 2025 onwards, these installation discounts ceased as part of the scheme’s suspension. The NSW Government has indicated that the change was made to align with the federal program and avoid overlapping subsidies. Meanwhile, the VPP incentive has been substantially increased: New qualifying battery systems can receive up to about $1,500 for joining a Virtual Power Plant under the updated scheme. Eligibility conditions still apply.
Launched on 1 July 2025, the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides up to 30% off the cost of installing a battery. This scheme supports both residential and small businesses, with added focus on assisting low-income and vulnerable Australians. It also broadens the Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme to include batteries, making it easier for more people to participate in the energy transition.
This $2.3 billion initiative is a central component of the Federal Government’s plan to achieve 82% renewables by 2030 and to make battery storage more accessible and affordable across the country.
You can’t claim both the old NSW battery discount scheme and the new federal rebate for the same system. Batteries that already received the NSW installation discount before June 2025 under the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme are not eligible for an additional rebate through the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program.
However, you can combine the federal rebate with the new NSW Virtual Power Plant (VPP) incentive.
Now that the new federal program has settled into place, the focus for most homeowners and businesses is how to make the best use of the current incentives. The landscape has changed, but opportunities remain strong for those who plan carefully and act with a long-term view.
If you have already installed a battery under the previous state program, check whether your system qualifies for the updated Virtual Power Plant (VPP) incentive. Joining a VPP allows your system to export power back to the grid when demand is high, earning credits or payments while supporting grid stability. It’s a smart way to keep benefitting even after the original rebate has ended.
For anyone who has not yet installed a battery, the Cheaper Home Batteries Program represents one of the best opportunities in recent years to invest. When paired with high-quality panels and a reputable installer, the long-term payback can be impressive, particularly for households with high daytime energy production and evening consumption.
Once your battery is installed, take the time to monitor its performance through the manufacturer’s app or dashboard. Keep an eye on charging and discharge cycles to understand how much solar energy you’re storing and using daily. Adjust your household habits to make the most of your system — for example, running appliances like dishwashers or pool pumps when your panels are generating the most power. This small shift can noticeably reduce grid reliance and maximise your return.
Like any major home investment, your battery and solar setup will perform best with regular maintenance. Schedule annual inspections to check connections, firmware updates and overall system health. Make sure your installer or service provider is available for quick support if an alert appears on your monitoring system. Clean panels, secure wiring and updated software all contribute to steady performance and long-term savings.
Finally, keep up to date with any new announcements from both the federal and NSW governments. Renewable incentives often evolve as budgets and policies shift. Monitoring changes can help you act quickly when new opportunities arise, whether it’s another rebate round, expanded eligibility or updates to the VPP structure.
With the NSW battery discount scheme now closed and the Cheaper Home Batteries Program underway, homeowners and businesses are entering a new stage of Australia’s renewable energy shift. The focus is on leveraging federal support, staying active in VPP programs and working with experts who deliver lasting results.
